The generic name for Elocon is Mometasone Topical.
Elocon is a type of cortisone which belongs to the medicine group, corticosteroid, and is classified as a high potency topical skin care medication. It is used on the skin to help relieve redness, itching, swelling, inflammation and discomfort that may be caused by a number of skin conditions such as: psoriasis, allergic reactions, eczema and other types of dermatitis.
Elocon works by inhibiting the actions of chemicals in the body that are known to cause redness, itching and swelling of the skin and can also be used to treat skin inflammations caused by skin conditions. It can be used on most areas of the skin in small amounts, but you need to speak with your doctor before you use Elocon.
Elocon is available in a Cream and Lotion. Both are white to off-white in colour and come packed in 15 and 45 gram tubes.
To use Elocon, apply a thin film of cream to the affected area and massage gently until it disappears. Use once daily. It should not be used for more than 4 weeks at a time, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember and resume to your normal time for applying Elocon.
Side effects may occur while you are using Elocon. Side effects may include:
- Itching
- Burning
- Thinning of the skin
- Stretch marks
- Acne/pimples
- Redness
- Numbness
- Dry skin
If you experience any side effects, talk with your doctor. Your skin condition may get worse before it starts to get better. If you are concerned or your condition is not improving, speak to your doctor.
Elocon is not recommended for people who are allergic to mometasone furoate, any corticosteroids or have: a viral infection, fungal skin infection, acne rosacea, just to name a few.
