The generic name for Zovirax is Acyclovir.
Acyclovir fits into a group of medicines known as anti-viral medicine, which is effective against preventing infections caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) like herpes and genital herpes. It also helps relieve and prevent recurrent infections from the varicella zoster virus (VSV), such as, chickenpox and shingles.
Acyclovir works by slowing down the spread and growth of the herpes virus, which allows the body to fight the infection and help to prevent reoccurrence. Acyclovir does not cure herpes, but help to lessen the symptoms in the infections.
Take Acyclovir as directed by your Doctor. Take each dose with a full glass of water and drink plenty of water regularly, to help keep your kidneys healthy and functioning properly. Acyclovir does not need to be taken with food, but if taken with food it may help decrease stomach upset. You need to take Acyclovir for the full length of time prescribed by your doctor, even if your symptoms get better. Take only under doctors directions.
Herpes is a contagious infection and you can infect other people, even while taking Acyclovir. Avoid infected areas from coming into contact with other people.
Side effects may occur while you are using Zovirax. Side effects may include:
- Blistering, peeling, or loosening of skin
- Changes in facial skin color
- Changes in vision
- Convulsions (seizures)
- Difficulty in breathing or swallowing
- Dizziness or feeling faint, severe
- Fast heartbeat
- Muscle cramps, pain, or weakness
- Nausea or vomiting
- Red or irritated eyes
- Skin rash, itching, or hives
- Sores, ulcers, or white spots in mouth or on lips
Zovirax is not recommended for people who are taking Carmustine, medicine for infections, inflammation or pain medicine, Cisplatin, are pregnant, breast feeding, women attempting to become pregnant, just to name a few. Speak to your doctor before using Zovirax and for further information.
